The Role of the Bench in Problem-Solving: Three Accredited Professional Hours for the Law Society of Ontario
This course provides three professionalism hours that are accredited by the Ontario Law Society. It consists of four videos totaling three hours in length, and a simple, optional quiz that provides you with a certificate of completion. The first video is a short introduction to the course by Ernest G. Tannis. The second video is an interview with former Justice Colin McKinnon. The third video is an interview with former Justice James Chadwick. The fourth video is a five-member multidisciplinary panel reviewing the second video with Justice Collin McKinnon and discussing access to justice in context of the second video. Both Justice James Chadwick and Justice Colin McKinnon are former Ontario Superior Court Justices. Ernest G. Tannis hosted the interviews with both Justices at the County of Carlton Law Association (CCLA) Library when he was still practicing as a lawyer.
After 47.5 years practicing law, Ernest G. Tannis is continuing the founder and president of the ADR Centre in Canada. He also continues to work as a Negotiation Consultant and is a pioneer in the area of “Alternative Dispute Resolution”.
The Honourable Colin McKinnon, K.C. was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 1996; a position he held for almost 23 years. As a judge, he regularly sat on the Divisional Court of Appeal, hearing civil and administrative law appeals. He was also invited to sit on the Court of Appeal as an ‘ad hoc’ judge.
The Honourable James D. Chadwick, Q.C, is a former Ontario Superior Court Justice in Ottawa. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario, High Court of Justice on June 7, 1988. Following the merger in 1990 of the Supreme Court of Ontario with the County and District Courts, James Chadwick was reassigned to the Eastern Region. He was Regional Senior Justice for Eastern Ontario from December 1994 until June 2000; and also served as acting Regional Senior Regional Justice for other periods.
This is the first of many accreditation courses that ADR Centre (Canada) Inc. plans to present to LSO licencees over time. It is being presented at an introductory price.
